Message From the Dean
The Faculty of Criminal Justice at General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) was established in 2021 and proudly stands as the first faculty within Sri Lanka’s higher education system—across both public and private universities—to offer a full spectrum of degree programs in the field of criminal justice. The faculty is comprised of two academic departments: the Department of Criminology and the Department of Police Science. Our academic portfolio ranges from Bachelor’s degrees to Doctoral programs, aiming to produce well-rounded professionals for the nation’s criminal justice system.
As of 2025, the Faculty has successfully enrolled three intakes—Intake 40, Intake 41, and Intake 42—who are actively engaged in their academic journey. Police officers, cadet students, and day scholars represent the vibrant student body of the Faculty of Criminal Justice. Real-world applicability is emphasized in our field-oriented and practical curriculum, enabling students to gain critical hands-on experience.
We proudly collaborate with national institutions such as the Sri Lanka Prison Department, Attorney General’s Department, Special Task Force, Police Training College, and the National Police Academy. These partnerships ensure our students are exposed to the operational realities and professional standards of the criminal justice sector.
Currently, the Faculty offers two main degree programs:
BSc in Police Science – tailored to meet the academic and professional development needs of police officers.
BSc in Criminology and Criminal Justice – designed for individuals working in, or aspiring to work in, agencies linked to the justice system or those interested in deepening their knowledge in criminology.
As the Dean, I warmly welcome all who are passionate about criminal justice and committed to building a safer and more just society to join our faculty and grow with us.
Dr. Anusha Edirisinghe
Dean – Faculty of Criminal Justice
