BSc. in Police Science
This is a Three Year Bachelor’s Degree Programme (SLQF level 5) offered by the Department of Police Science of the Faculty of Criminal Justice. The successful undergraduates will achieve the be given BSc in Police Science qualification. The medium of instruction of the degree programme is English. The course modules are taught by KDU academics and other University academics and professionals with a wealth of long-term experience in the relevant fields of study. The BSc in Police Science Degree Programme to be offered to police officers by KDU aims to enhance the professionalism of the undergraduates with the solemn objective of rendering a yeoman service to the nation.
The objectives of this programme are to develop graduates with:
- An in-depth knowledge of Policing, Criminology and Police Administration;
- Qualities, attitudes, characteristics, leadership skills and moral conduct, that are integral and essential qualities for effective functioning as a police officer;
- Communication, problem solving, team working and information-sharing skills reasoning and information-sharing skills which will contribute to decision;
- In-depth knowledge in the field of ICT and other pertinent subjects relevant for policing and enhance the skills associated with the subject matter;
- Enhanced knowledge and skills in language in English and the two official languages;
- Analytical reasoning and innovative thinking for performance in their career;
- Ability to undertake continuous training and professional development in principles and content in the field of Police Science.
- Apply leadership and management skills for law enforcement;
- Demonstrate specialized technical and administrative skills required in crime investigations;
- Develop organizational systems that foster problem solving within the local and international communities;
- Demonstrate knowledge in relation to police science and interpretation of policy documents regarding the law enforcement;
- Assess various investigative techniques and demonstrate the ability to select the most appropriate technique available and adopt domestically/locally and internationally;
- Communicate effectively with all the relevant stakeholders, such as different communities, professionals, law enforcement authorities etc.;
- Demonstrate the ability to work effectively and ethically with diverse populations while demonstrating integrity;
- Demonstrate responsible and accountable conduct to all actions related to professional work and life;
- Incorporate community involvement in creation of a safe environment related to law enforcement;
- Be aware of ethical implications of professional and personal actions in law enforcement.
- Engage in professional development and lifelong learning
As a KDU Police Science graduate, he/she would be able to apply the specific knowledge, critical understanding and skills of policing to their career in law enforcement. He/she has an in-depth understanding and relevant professional skills in crime investigations, police administration and police governance, safety, national security, intelligence, dealing with different segments in the society in a professional manner, protection, crime analysis and crime prevention. The graduate from KDU would be responsive to the needs of the community he/she is serving as well as society at large, while adhering to high ethical and professional standards, and enhancing the overall quality of police service to the public.
