institution from gaining so much power that it becomes a law unto itself.
Lack of free speech stifles critical thought, which leads to poor decisions
and people who are easily misled by politicians and other officials.
Never again must someone be imprisoned for expressing an opinion that
does not hurt anyone else. In a nation that values free speech, it should
never be illegal to offend or insult someone. We observe the terrible
results of similar law-making in other nations around the world.
Participatory democracy is noisy, and for good reason-different
viewpoints should be allowed to be expressed to have an informed
conversation rather than just a small group of people's viewpoints. It is
necessary to create a boundary, and we must do so right now, in this
place, and we must continue the worthwhile work we have started doing
today to stave off any new dangers to our right to free speech.
